Dreaming of Spring

Dreaming of Spring

Ready, for the lengthening of days and the warmth that comes from a sun that likes to linger well past afternoon tea (and chocolate:) which has somehow become habit over the winter. I love Spring…if you listen carefully, you notice that the birds sing their song just a little bit sweeter. There is promise, in the newness of the season yet to come. I am waiting for the glow of that special light…daydreaming it…and wishing it to find me soon ~

Presence, Felt ~

Presence, Felt ~

Snow fell and the world quieted down. A day to paint…

Solitary…but never alone. Presence, felt…encouraging the brush to dip yet again in water, the hand to slide so that the water flows. I reach for the pen…I want to make lines dance. Silence, all but for breath which makes its own gentle rhythm. I glance up…smile…notice the snowflakes falling slowly… and then refocus on the watercolor at hand. It might be all about technique one minute, or play or color, the next. It might never be used in a collection…or offered for sale, or shown in exhibition. All I know is that when the lines and flow of paint feel right to my eye, it brings profound joy. If I get the colors right too…well, then, that’s a banner day;)

A lovely way to spend a few hours on a quiet snowy day ~

Anchored In a Daydream ~

Anchored In a Daydream ~

A wistful photograph floated my way on Pinterest and I was instantly drawn to it, the feel of the image…the mood created. And of course, it’s only natural considering how I feel about the sea and ocean rocks and all things pulled by tide and time. Inspired, I sketched her quickly in pencil, added detail in ink and let the watercolor flow as it does best. I like that there is a sense of contentment in the pose…of being one with saltwater, anchored in a daydream…at peace with the waiting ~

Botanical Sketch~

Botanical Sketch~

This week’s play…an experiment of sorts. There have been a few ideas and techniques I’ve been wanting to explore.

Time is precious these days…my design work often leaves little time for play like this. Recently, since sleep has been eluding me, I’ve found myself sitting at my desk late into the night trying to fill the creative parts of me that ache to sketch and paint like this.

I like what’s emerging…There is possibility here. To my surprise, this little botanical sketch made my twitter stream explode ~ As of this writing, I am still gathering energy to make my way back there to thank so many for their kindness. It is always so curious to me, the paintings that seem to resonate the most with others.

Absorbing The Blue

Absorbing The Blue

No tentative toes testing for ice
No need to dip fingertips twice
To know…
Yeah, it’s cold.

But the current seduces and before you know it you are sucked in, fast.
Past the shores you slip
In and out of consciousness.
If only you slept this deeply…

Letting go, feel the sea flow fulfill.
Rejoice… No choice
But to lay arched back, buoyed…
Absorbing the blue ~

Subtle Shift ~

Subtle Shift ~

Feeling something  pulsing just beneath skin. It’s been faintly felt for some time and I am beginning to see it in the lines of my art…

There is often a divergence between the art I design for my licensing clients and the art I create just for me. But there is subtle change at play here, for both, in the way the paint is flowing off the brush, the way my hand is moving across the page, the way I want to lay down ink. The gap is closing and in some cases the overlap is quite visible to me.

This happens from time to time…this particular heartbeat within, and I know from experience that it is a feeling to honor. So I’m breathing through it, trying to find the balance and harmony between line, color, creative play and design work so that new art can evolve freely, as it needs to…and as it should.

Wondering…do you see a subtle shift, too?

In The Moment ~

In The Moment ~

My ink and watercolor is finally complete and will soon be on its way to Orlando, Florida for the 4th Twitter Art Exhibit. Proceeds from the sale of artwork for this show will benefit The Center for Contemporary Dance, Special Needs Classes, a nonprofit (501)©3 organization dedicated to dance education and outreach. As always, there is much of me within the lines and washes of watercolor of my work… this piece is a true reflection of a lovely moment in time.

Always an honor to have my art hang on the wall amidst such talented artists, many of whom are dear friends. Warm thanks as always to David Sandum, the founder of the TAE and to all those behind the scenes who work tirelessly to ensure the exhibit is a success. It has been a pleasure to donate my art over the years and to watch the exhibit evolve into such a fantastic international collective.

I invite you to read more about the exhibit here, to follow along on twitter and, if you haven’t done so already,  to create a work of art to be included in the exhibition. The deadline for art submission is February 24, 2014… More details on the Call For Artists page.
